Merge studios in Houston, Texas is a custom furniture and architectural design firm. They believe in only using materials that compliment a particular design, whether it's made from wood, metal, glass or an environmentally green product. They are a unique company who needs unique custom solutions. Matt Schott, one of Merge Studio's principles and designers was tasked with fabricating and installing a large-scale art glass project in a hospital in Ohio. The installation consisted of large glass "chimes" with metal caps on the tops and bottoms. What made the installation particularly unique was the need to make the chimes accessible to hospital maintenance staff to take down and apply vinyl lettering to name donors to the hospital; an ongoing job that could potentially have been very labor intensive for local staff.
Matt contacted Arakawa and found a number of potential solutions that would perfectly compliment the installation while at the same time solving the ongoing maintenance problem. After a quick web search and initial call Arakawa provided Matt with a number of possible solutions, allowing his team to choose the most effective and aesthetically appropriate hanging system to compliment the piece. "Arakawa sent us samples from the beginning. As soon as we showed our clients they wanted them," Matt said.
When asked why he chose Arakawa's solution over another hanging system, he indicated that Merge has used other products in the past but the Arakawa difference was in the ease of installation and maintenance. "We've used other systems in the past but they were just uninteresting and boring. Aesthetically the Arakawa product is really well made."
