Carrie Mcgee / An Arakawa solution
Sometimes it takes a while to find something when you’re not really sure what it is that you’re looking for. But once you find it you wonder how you ever got along without it. That’s what happened when artist Carrie Mcgee’s husband happened across a catalog in a friend’s studio…
Carrie McGee is a visual artist from Nashville, Tennessee specializing in mixed media constructions, exploring variation within repeated forms. Utilizing transparent resin as a ground, she experiments with natural and chemical processes, such as rust and oxidation, to create luminous works that emanate a meditative pulse. The end results are beautiful hanging glass-like pieces that are a combination of rust, oil, acrylic and metal that can range from small wall hangings to large scale suspended pieces in building atriums.
For her early pieces McGee would take a trip to her local hardware store to piece together her own home-grown hanging solutions. Sourcing wire, eye hooks and random hand made brackets she often ended up with contraptions that were less than complimentary, and far from invisible. More importantly, nearly every solution was a custom one-off with inconsistent quality and construction based on what materials were readily available in her local stores.
Fortunately for Carrie her husband spotted an Arakawa catalog on a visit to a friend's studio and brought it home thinking it might be a good way to display Carrie's pieces in a consistent and visually appealing way. But more importantly McGee was starting to get commissions for pieces where specs were becoming more and more important. There was a growing need for consistency and assurances of durability as her pieces started being displayed in public places. With Arakawa she found a combination of functionality and design aesthetic that so far had been unparalleled. Stainless steel was a big deal, and the smaller cable size of the Arakawa cables was as important as their superior strength.
But there was more to it than just the product. Carrie found that the people she contacted at Arakawa had a genuine interest in her art as well as in her as a customer. They understood her needs and worked with her personally to come up with custom solutions based on her vision. Of her first encounter with an Arakawa representative on the phone she recalls, "they asked me to send them a sketch and they came up with a custom solution right away. They totally changed things for me. They made things possible that weren't possible before."
McGee now recommends Arakawa Hanging Systems to people whenever she gets the chance. When asked how she would define the Arakawa difference she simply said, "I never worked with another company for hanging systems before, but I wouldn't consider going anywhere else. There's no need to. Arakawa is that good." To learn more about Carrie McGee and her unique art, visit http://www.carriemcgee.com.
